If you go back and reread what I wrote, I never defended what Frank Miller said, nor did I imply in any way that I feel we need to restrict personal freedoms. What I was saying was he made a leap in topic. In a way I was agreeing with Geoff’s assessment that Frank Miller’s post was of poor writing quality, but for a different reason than what he said.

Geoff — I know it was your post. I also know that there is such a thing as “guilt by association.”

And to the other poster, whether Miller said that OWS was in league with terrorists or just giving terrorists a reason to be happy is beside the point. Fifty years or so ago, the same rationale was used to oppose a number or political movements, including that to end racial discrimination, on the grounds that they were “giving aid and comfort to the enemy” (which, in this case, was the “Godless Commies” in the Soviet Union). If we have to restrict our freedom because a given position “gives terrorists a chance to laugh at American,” we’re going to find we have few freedoms left.

I am not sure his intent in that rant was to link OWS to terrorists. What I got from it was that terrorists now have a new reason to laugh at America because of the whole Occupy (insert noun here) thing going on across the country. He might have worded it a bit better, but I did not see him trying to actually equate terrorists to the protestors in any way.

If anything he basically said something equivalent to “I hate these apples! And would you look at this anvil?” He is less guilty of leaps in logic and more guilty of leaps in topic. He wandered off topic without explaining properly what subject a and subject b have to do with each other (in his mind at least), and we are left to figure out what he is getting at on our own.

Just to be clear, this was a “Geoff” post, and I wanted to keep it as a-political as possible. There are a lot of great, intelligent writers (Orson Scott Card comes to mind) who make fantastic points and compelling arguments coming from the same general side as Mr. Miller. More than anything, I was decrying the actual quality of writing in his missive.
