I sometimes find it pretty crazy what hostesses and wait staff can get away with when their managers aren’t watching. Being a former waiter myself, I know exactly how frustrating the job can be, as well as the impulse to act out. Not that I ever did… much. But some of the people I worked with were downright mean to their customers when they felt they weren’t going to be held accountable.
Any of you waiters out there have funny stories about the “abuse of power” at work? Or any customers want to share your most unbelievable eating out moments?

I don’t get it. I get that the comic is all about how they get bullied and have low self esteem. But, if I were out with my friends and we were being given an attitude by the front desk I would ask for a manager in a heart beat and let them know what is going on and then leave. I DEFINITELY wouldn’t give them a penny of my money.
well I don’t know if it was out of malice or misjudgment, but when we took our dad out for father’s day, we were seated in a half empty restaurant once right next to two long tables worth of church staff during their “meeting”(aka drink heavily and complain about the homeless people that come during their services). A couple of the waiters we passed along the way looked sorry for us, but after our food came out, one of the waiters (not the hostess from the front) asked us if we wanted to move. As a family, we earnestly declined the offer, and whispered among ourselves who was our favorite loudmouth. When we left, my dad said that was the best father’s day he ever had. Its a good thing we don’t go to church though.
That’s a good point MD – it’s been my experience that some of the time that’s the case, but in more than a few instances, people either won’t stand up for themselves or just don’t want the hassle of having to talk to a manager (either they don’t want to take the time or just don’t care that much), and even so, I’ve seen managers who don’t care even when something like this is brought to their attention. Agreed though: my grownup-self, at least, would either leave or make it an issue. Not sure how I would act when I was younger and the person I’d have to complain about was someone I’d have to deal with on a daily basis at school.
I’m a teenager and I have self esteem issues, I definitely would not be confident enough to stand up to a hostess who did that to me. I can really relate to her at this point because it has happened to me.
Ya know, those who say “I’d ask for the manager!” and “They wouldn’t get a penny of my money!” in response to the waitress’s attitude…the main character is in friggin HIGH SCHOOL. >.>; How many high schoolers actually think about something like the quality of service when they’re going out somewhere for a social thing?
I’d like to say I wouldn’t take that crap from any waitress/hostess, but that’s such a lie. I’m just too chicken to speak up 8′D
Well, I know as a waitress I can be a bit snippy to high schoolers because I KNOW they aren’t going to tip well. I hear those whispers of “I have $5, how much do you have?” “We can get two rolls with that, I think?” “Soup/salad?” “No, I don’t have enough…”
I’ll agree with MD about having a good point, but shinami has an even better for Anna I think. I haven’t exactly had this happen to me, but I’ve had a similar situation. I’m still in high school, and I really have no problem telling someone off, and my I took advantage of who the hostess was and sat where I wanted with my friends since I knew the girl would behave to us there like she did at school.
That aside, what happened to Anna’s purse in the last panel? Did she switch shoulders?
I would literally flip the eff out if i ever got attitude like that, which i did before. I was with a group of 6 or 7, and this waiter at Applebee’s was being a prick, so me and about 3 of the others decided to start a scene right there in the middle of the restaurant. we were yelling so loud lol, it went on for a good 3-4 minutes before we started laughing and walked out, epic night
I just read through this entire comic…. I LOVE IT!! You’re doing a GREAT job!!!
Dusk, that’s kind of uncool. You don’t know if they don’t get allowances, they’re too busy with their extracurricular or AP classes to get a job, they help their parents with the bills, etc etc. Maybe they just saved as much as they could so they could go out with their friends. They’re choosing to spend what little money they have at your establishment. Why should you treat them as less-than?
Now that I’m older, I know how to deal with this sort of situation. But when I was in high school, my mom fell through the ceiling and crushed her heel. She was on a scooter for her knee part of the time, and crutches the other half, on and off what with surgeries. Whenever I took her out, people always made a point of sitting us in the least desirable table and giving us unbelievably slow service; everyone else was more important, because she HAD to dress comfortably. It didn’t bother me half as much as it did her, but now I wish I’d spoken up.
Dear Dusk: I agree with Chuck. Personally, I worked when I was in high school. I didn’t really need the money, but I had it specifically for things like going out with my friends. And if the service was good, I would make a point of tipping extra. It’s not fair to lump all high schoolers together just because some of them can’t afford to tip.
That’s terrible Shaden. I probably would have given you and your mum special service not treat you like dirt. Some people are just too quick to judge.
Not a restaurant story, but I think it’s relevant. I was shopping for a party at Wal-Mart once, and while I’ll admit I’m a little chubby, I am definitely not fat. The 300+ pound cashier told me, without a trace of irony, that I shouldn’t be buying junk food and that I should watch my diet. I asked for the manager and the guy was fired on the spot. I wasn’t trying to get him fired, just reprimanded, but I admit feeling a little satisfied.
UPDATE!!!!
Maybe running a little late on this but I’d like to throw in my two cents.
I’ve lived on my own since I was 14(Mother passed away) and worked very hard to pay my own bills etc etc, so I know how it goes to only have a few dollars to go out with friends. I dont think its fair that a waiter or waitress would treat their customers unfairly based on age or differences. I’ll be the first to admit that my tips werent always grand when I couldnt afford them, but if there were ever an issue with an employee being rude or rash with me I was also the first to offer them a charming smile while asking for their manager and at that point my tip (measly or not) became non-existent.
IE: I’m not going to pay you for treating me unkindly.
That being said, I can also understand Anna’s point of view as well as the other Highschoolers who have commented here. Not everyone has the guts to ask for the manager of someone who is being nasty to them. And I’d probably shy away too knowing I had to deal with that person every day. (Though the sarcastic one in me would of course make it up to them in another way IE: ;D A mess at the table to clean up or a nasty picture drawn on a napkin for them to maul over later)
a bit late in commenting but I have a few things to say.
Fristly Jeremy that is seriously uncool. Throwing a hissy fit when a server gives you attitude makes you no better than them, heck in some cases I’d say it’s worse. It’s one thing to ask to speak to the manager, but causing a scene like that I’d say is uncalled for. Just like servers shouldn’t be quick to judge neither should costomers. Of course servers should do their best to be polite, but you have to put up with a lot of BS in a service job and if it’s been a long day it can be hard. The attitude they give you may not always even be intentional. My advice is if it’s small attitude don’t make a big deal out of it, and if it really is an issue get the manager, but don’t just start yelling at them helps no one and makes you look like an ass in front of the rest of the resturant.
Aside from that I can see why Anna didn’t do anything. In a way they did stand up from themselves by finding their own seats, and it’s not always worth the hassal to talk to a manager for something small.
Almost a month between pages…
so is there an update schedule that you guys can give us so we know when to check this? even if it’s once a month or something, just so we know.
“Almost a month between pages…”
Seems like pretty much par for the course here.
Yep! It’s a pity, it seemed like a promising comic, but with a pace like this I can’t really enjoy it. Maybe I’ll come back in six months or so and see how/if things have progressed.
Best of luck!
Hi guys I help with the production on the comic and we do have 3 new comics waiting to be lettered. We hope to get more on a regular schedule soon. So glad you are enjoying the series and thanks for your patience!
it would be excellent if there was a schedule or at least a next comic to be posted on: _________ . it’s kind of disappointing to keep checking back and never see anything , especially when we get 2 comics leading UP to an event in about 2 months …
Oh. Okay then, after re-reading it I recognize her from after Bethanny dumped that green stuff on Anna!
Also, Sam. I did not get ‘attitude’ from that, and he’s not causing a scene. If anything, he’s averting one. She’s causing a scene.
