Site Upgrade

UPDATE 2/11/2011:  Ok, I think we’re about done for now – I didn’t get quite as much changed as I’d like, but then again, I’m an endless tinkerer.  I do have lots of plans for Hot Mess 2.0, though!

Ok, this is going to be nerve-wracking for me, but we’re going through a slight upgrade to the site.  All links should work, but for just a bit the layout might be a tad funky.  Please bear with us!  New content will continue to be posted!

Eighty Degrees and Sunny in LA

Ok, so the title of this post might be in bad taste, considering that the rest of the world is seemingly in the deepest blizzard we’ve had in years.  But for me, this weird (and WAY early) burst of warm weather is always a double edged sword.  It’s nice to finally get out and get some sun, but on the other hand, here in Los Angeles at least, the first bits of warm weather invariably bring with it mighty gusts of Santa Anna winds… which means lots of dust in the air… which means my sinuses will try to kill me.

I’ll still be posting daily, but probably a little lighter than usual.  And for those who care, I’ll probably be doing another Pug Post this weekend.

Interview with Hot Mess Art Contest Winner, Neisha Lockwood!

Here’s a little Q & A with the grand prize winner of the very first Hot Mess Art Contest!
HOT MESS:  How did you first find out about Hot Mess?
NEISHA LOCKWOOD:  I caught a link to it from Emily Chan’s blog on DeviantArt.
HM:  Nice!  We LOVE StupidFox. So, after checking out the comic, what made you want to enter the contest?
NL:  I read the comic and realized that I seriously identify with Anna – even though I have never been the “new kid,” I have always been an outsider. I love the characters and their personalities, so I wanted to show that even if I didn’t win!
HM:  So, what’s your overall goal as an artist?
NL:  I have never thought about that actually. I really just love art and expressing myself through art.
HM:  Ok, so as an artist, what would be your dream project to work on?
NL:  I actually have had this crazy idea to modify a bunch of mannequins for a while now…
HM:  Ha, that sounds cool – I think I know what you’re next contest entry will be!  So who is your favorite Hot Mess character?
NL:  Definitely Scooziecat!
MH:  Why is that?
NL:  He is sort of the voice of reason and reality in Anna’s world and I relate most to him.  And he is super cute.
HM:  Do you think of yourself as a Hot Mess?
NL:  Oh, for sure. I will be the first to admit that I have quite a few screws loose – or missing entirely. :D

HM:  Well, congratulations and thank you again for checking out the site – we’re working hard to get you, and everyone else who clicks over more content than ever before… as well as a soon to be announced second art contest!

Pug Off!

Lots of site news this week, and a few changes to Hot Mess that I can’t wait to tell you about!

The first thing to mention is that we’re going to be updating more often.  For now, we’ll be keeping to the same comic schedule, but you’re going to see lots more blogging from Diana and myself.

Second, we’re going to announce the winners of the Hot Mess art contest this upcoming Wednesday!  We’ll post the winning entry in the comic space on the site.

And there’s something else I want to share:

It is impossible to be around a Pug and not instantly be in a better mood.

Just look at this:

She's looking in two different directions at once

She's truly a weirdo

Seriously, just look at that.

That’s Izzy.  She is, to put is gently, the weirdest dog I’ve ever known.  I’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old, and ever since she was a tiny puppy, she’s been a food obsessed, attention hogging, Mogwai-looking spaz.  In fact, until the age of 1, every time anyone would pick her up, she’d get so excited that she’d violently wiggle, making it impossible for most people to hold her longer and a few seconds.  Really self-defeating, if you think about it.  On top of that, she’s oddly skinny, especially for a Pug.  She used to go on 5k runs with me – a very un-puglike thing to do.  Instead of barking, she whines in very animated, long-winded diatribes.  She’s also kind of a bully.  Oh, and she can stick her ears up like a bat when she wants to look like she’s paying attention to you.

So, anyway, as a thank you to all the pugs out there who make everyone they meet that much happier, I’m going to occasionally post some pug-related news.

Have a great weekend everyone!
